Pattaya, or “Sin-City” as it is commonly referred to by overseas visitors, is regarded as the capital of sex tourism in Asia.
Each year an estimated 13.7 million tourists descend upon the Thai city. The majority are men from developed nations who are drawn to the warm climate, the affordable prices and the promise of love and sex.
Pattaya has a reported 27.000 sex workers. That is roughly one for every five people living in the city.
Soi 6 is a 350-meter long stretch between Beach Road and 1st Road, employs hundreds of sex-workers to operate the dozens of brothels lining the walkway.
It is not uncommon for these women to work very long hours, usually from 10 a.m. until 1 a.m., six days a week.
Each bar has upstairs rooms which can be rented out for what’s referred to as “short-time” services.
The girls have to clean the men in the shower before the service is provided.
If a customer decides they want the women’s services for longer, they can pay the bar a daily fee, known as a “bar fine”. The woman can charge what she decides is her worth.
Dotted along the beach road are hundreds of women offering their services. They come from all walks of life. It is not uncommon to see university students standing next to housewives.
Many are addicted to drugs such as methamphetamine.
